History
The Congregation was founded in 1856 in France by Mother Mary of Providence (Eugenie Smet), whose inspiration, until the unheard of in the Church, was the deliverance of the souls in Purgatory for the Greater Glory of God. the Order will grow rapidly; it is the work God has been awaiting so long. These words of St. Jean Marie Vianney to the Foundress have been realized. The members worked at home and in foreign missions in 14 countries, and on 3 continents. The congregation, approved by the Holy See, follows rules adapted from those of St. Ignatius.
Purpose
The Helpers of the Holy Souls dedicate the active and contemplative lives in filling the Church Triumphant with souls delivered from the Church Suffering, by caring for the corporal and spiritual needs of the Church Militant, especially by home visitations; care of the sick-poor; religious instruction, and social work of all kinds.
Qualifications
Age: 16 to 30.
A spirit of sacrifice.
Habit
A simple black pleated habit, cape, and veil edged with white; white collar and cuffs. A silver chain and crucifix.
