History
In 1845, upon the request of Bishop Phelan, of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, the Grey Nuns of Montreal, founded in 1783 by Blessed Marguerite d’Youville, sent four Sisters, under the leadership of Mother Elizabeth Bruyere, to found an autonomous Congregation in Bytown, now Ottawa. Their Rule received pontifical approbation in 1889. 


Purpose
The Sisters are actively engaged in teaching from kindergarten to university levels, nursing in general and chronic hospitals, and operating homes for orphans and the aged.


Training
The six-month postulancy is followed by an eighteen-month novitiate. Temporary vows are made for three years after which perpetual vows are pronounced. The sisters continue their spiritual formation while taking college course toward their nursing and professional degrees.


Qualifications
• Age: at least 18.
• Willing to assume the obligations and sacrifices of religious life.


Habit
Novices and Professed Nuns wear a grey dress, black cape, and a black veil.
