History
The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, also known as the Sisters of Penance, was founded in 1849, when six women, Tertiaries of the Third Order of St. Francis of the diocese of Augsburg, Germany, came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and established the St. Francis of Assisi Convent. One of the first Motherhouses to be established in this state. Here the sisters began their first diocesan charitable work in 1854 at St. Aemilian’s Orphanage. Soon afterwards they engaged in domestic services for the advancement of God’s priesthood at St. Francis Seminary. The sisters staffed over eighty grade and high schools. 3 orphanages, two homes for the aged, and a foreign mission. The sisters have specifically dedicated their lives to care for God’s mentally handicapped in three St. Colletta Schools in Wisconsin, Illinois and Massachusetts.

Purpose
The aim of the Community of St. Francis of Assisi is the glorification of God through works of charity: first of all the instruction and education of youth, even on foreign missions: secondly, the caring and education of children who are orphaned, deaf, mentally-disabled or blind; the care of the domestic department in Institutions..

Qualifications
• No special qualification in education since the Congregation is engaged in a variety of occupations.
• Age: between the age of 16 and 30.

Habit
The sisters wear a black habit and veil, with a white coif, collar, and a white girdle with a rosary.
