History
In 1876, Mother Alfred Moes and a group of Sisters came to Minnesota from Joliet, Illinois, to establish schools in the territory. The Academy of Our Lady of Lourdes, a school for young women was dedicated in Rochester, December 8, 1877, and when on December 223 of the same year the new Congregation was established, this building became the Motherhouse.
The devastating results of a tornado which stuck Rochester in 1883 showed the necessity of a hospital, the establishment of which was undertaken by Mother Alfred. This Hospital, dedicated in 1889, has developed into the world-wide known St. Mary’s Hospital.
