History
The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis were established in Peoria, Illinois on July 16, 1877, under the direction of Bishop John Lancaster Spalding. Six pioneer religious with 23 companions came from Herford, Germany, to this country in 1875. They settled in Dubuque, Iowa and two years later founded St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. Sister Francis Krasse became Superior and the first Reverend Mother of the new Order.
Purpose
The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis devote their lives to the attainment of their own sanctification and perfection by always seeking the greater glory of God in the service of the sick, and the ministering to their fellow human beings.
Qualifications
• High School Education.
• Age: 18 to 30.
Habit
The sisters wear a brown habit and a black veil. The coif, guimpe and band are white.
