History
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, an American foundation, was established in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1849. The founders were a group of Tertiaries of St. Francis who had emigrated from Bavaria for the purpose of helping the North American mission cause. The Community headquarters were successively transferred to Jefferson, Wisconsin in 1864, and to La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1871.
Purpose
The sanctification of its members and the salvation of souls is the twofold objective of the sisterhood. The major activities are education of all levels; the care of orphans, the sick, and the aged; as well as home and foreign mission work.
Training
The community conducts an aspirancy for high school girls interested in the religious life. The six-month postulancy is followed by a two-year novitiate. At the expiration of the novitiate, the novice makes her temporary profession of vows. During the following year of the juniorate, the sister continues her spiritual formation while taking courses towards her academic or nursing degree.
Qualifications
• A high school education.
• Age: 16 to 30.
Habit
The Sisters wear a black habit and veil, a white coif, quimpe, and cord.
