History
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity was founded in Heythuysen, Holland, on May 10, 1835, by Catherine Daemen (in religion known as Mother Magdalen). From Holland, the Community rapidly expanded to Germany, Poland, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia, and the United States.

Purpose
The Sisters teach in primary, elementary and high schools, and conduct academies, a liberal arts college, hospitals, orphanages,and missions.

Training
The training program for the young religious begins with a one-year postulancy. A two-year novitiate follows the postulancy. During this time the novice is grounded in the principles of the religious life and the Franciscan spirit. The profession of temporary vows is followed by a two-year juniorate, during which the spiritual and education formation is continued. The religious then begins her apostolate. After five years of temporary vows the sister makes her profession of perpetual vows.

Qualifications
• Age: 18 to 30.
• Have good health and a religious vocation.

Habit
The sisters wear a dark brown habit and scapular, a white woolen cord with three knots, head covering of white linens, over which a black veil is worn.
