History
The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, whose American Provincial Motherhouse is at Hankinson, North Dakota, enjoy the unique distinction of being probably the oldest of the Franciscan Sisterhood of the Third Order existing toady. As early as 1241, only fifteen years after the death of St. Francis, the first convent of this sisterhood, the General Motherhouse, was founded at Dillingen on the Danube in the diocese of Augsburg, Germany. Records date the founding from Count Hartmann IV von Dillingen and his son Hartmann V; the latter was afterwards made Bishop of Augsburg (1250 - 1286).Purpose
The glory of God through personal sanctification and the salvation of souls is the sister’s primary ambition. The sisters teach, nurse, care for the aged, design and prepare vestments, and make and supply alter breads.Qualifications
• Age: 14 to 30.
• Desire to dedicate her life to God.Habit
The sisters wear a black habit and scapular, a white cord, and a rosary. The head dress consists of a coif and a black veil.NOTE: This is the Order in which Berta Hummel was a member. Pictured is the American branch. The habit is different than that of the German Community. Both Habits Are Available.
