History
The Congregation of the School Sisters of Saint Francis of Christ the King originated in 1864, through the efforts of Bishop Anthony Slomsek and Bishop Jacob Stepnicher of Marburg. The first members came to America in 1909, to Saint John’s School, Kansas City. In a short time there were teachers in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Due to persecution in Yugoslavia, the motherhouse moved to Rome. The American providence has its headquarters at Lemont, Illinois.
Purpose
The aim of the Sisters of Saint Francis is: the glory of God, and personal sanctification of its members through the observance of the simply vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience; the education of youth, and the direction of homes for the orphaned and aged.
Training
The six-month postulancy is followed by a two-year novitiate. First vows are pronounced and are renewed for five years. The Perpetual vows are then made. The sisters continue their spiritual formation while pursuing their education for their professional and nursing degrees.
Qualifications
• Completion of high school.
• Age: under 30
Habit
The sisters wear a black habit and veil, white cord, and rosary.
