History
The first foundation of the Bernardine Sisters in the United States was made in 1894, by Mother Veronica and four companions who had come from Europe where the Community was in existence since the fifteen century. This small group, after the usual hardships and struggles accompanying the beginnings of any great work of God, grew into a Community of 900 Sisters reaching out across the length of the United States, and south of the Equator to far0off Brazil.
Purpose
The general object of the Congregation is the glory of God and the sanctification of its members through the faithful observance of the three vows of religion and the rule of the Third Order of St. Francis. The special object is to bring Christ to others by performing works of mercy; teaching, nursing in hospitals, taking care of orphans, the poor and aged, and social service.
Training
The six to twelve-month postulancy is followed by a two-year novitiate. Temporary vows are then made. The Sisters Formation program which begins with the Juniorate is carried on to completion. Each sister makes a spiritual tertianship around ten years after her profession of perpetual vows.
Qualifications
• Completion of high school
• Age: under 30
Habit
The sisters wear a dark brown habit, scapular, and mantle, a black veil, white coif, band, collar, and cincture, a rosary, crucifix and ring.
