History
The Congregation of Saint Dorothy was founded by Poala Frassinetti in 1834. The first foundation was made at Quinto. Other Convents were soon opened in Genoa, Rome, Naples, and Bologna. In 1866 horizons broadened, mission fields beckoned; Brazil and Portugal welcomed the Dorotheans. The Dorotheans were exiled from Portugal in 1910, when Religious Congregations were suppressed. Belgium, England, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland received them. It was during this persecution that Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York, and Bishop Harkins of Providence invited the Sisters Of St. Dorothy to their dioceses in the United States.
Purpose
The principal object of the Congregation is the moral and religious education of girls in boarding or day schools, or in orphanages, the Dorotheans gladly accept other apostolic works.
Qualifications
• Age” 16 to 30
• Average intelligence.
Habit
The Sisters wear a black habit, cape, and veil, a white bonnet, rosary, and a crucifix.
