History
From the convent of St. Catherine of Siena, Springfield, Kentucky, six Sisters were sent in 1873 to begin an Illinois foundation at the invitation of Bishop Baltes, who wanted a Dominican motherhouse and novitiate in his diocese. Thus, through the goodness of God, the Dominicans of Springfield came into being.Purpose
The purpose of the Sisters is to glorify God, sanctify themselves, and bring Christ to others. They teach school, nurse in hospitals, care for orphans and the aged, supervise recreation centers, and prepare children in rural neighborhoods to receive the Sacraments.Training
After a candidacy of three months, the aspirant is admitted into the one-year postulancy. This is followed by a one-year novitiate. Temporary vows are made for three years after which perpetual vows are pronounced. After first profession of vows the sisters complete the courses towards their professional degrees which they began during their year of postulancy.Qualifications
• Age: 16 to 30. Exceptions are sometimes made.
• Completion of high school.Habit
The Sisters wear the white and black habit of St. Dominic, symbolic of innocence and penance.
