History
The Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence was founded by Venerable John Martin Moye, who with the assistance of Mademoiselle Marguerite LeComte, opened the first school at Vigy, France, in 1762. After the French Revolution, the novitiate was transferred from Hommarting to St. Jean Jean de Bassel in Lorraine. In 1866, two Sisters of Divine Providence from Lorraine accompanied Bishop Claude Dubuis to Austin, Texas, which was their first foundation in the United States, but Providence guided them to Castroville. The first permanent school opened there October, 1868. July, 1896, saw the removal of the Mother House from Castroville to the present home in San Antonio. In 1912, final approval was given the Congregation in Texas by Pope Pius X.Purpose
For the greater glory of God, the Sisters devote themselves to the work of personal sanctification and the salvation of souls. In addition to the educational work, ranging from nursery school through college graduate level, the Congregation is dedicated to the care of the sick.Training
The community has an aspirancy for graduates of elementary school who desire to become religious. The religious formation consists of a candidacy of one year and six months, a postulancy of six months and a novitiate of one year, followed by a juniorate of one full year. Perpetual vows are taken only after four more years are spent in apostolic labors. A full degree program is required of each sister before she begins her apostolic work.Qualifications

The Sisters wear a black pleated habit , veil and circular cape, a white collar and band, a crucifix, rosary and ring.
