History
The Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence was founded in France in 1762 by the Venerable Jean Martin Moye, a secular priest of the diocese of Metz. In 1889, the American Providence was established at the request of The Most Reverend Camillus Paul Maes, Bishop of Covington Kentucky. From this small foundation at Mount St. Martin, Newport, Kentucky, the Sisters, drew recruits from American girls. Aided by additional members from the Motherhouse in France, they opened academies in Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Rhode Island, and Maryland.

Purpose
The purpose of the Congregation is the salvation of souls through works of charity, especially the education of youth preferably in rural districts. Besides teaching from kindergarten to university levels, there are duties of nursing, the care of infants, orphans, the aged, and other manifold domestic administrative tasks incidental to every educational or charitable establishment.

Qualifications
• Good health, an upright intention, and readiness to obey.
• Age: 14 to 30

Habit
The habit consists of a black serge dress and cape, a round guimpe, headband and coronet, a black veil, a rosary, crucifix, and silver ring.
