History
From Emmitsburg, Maryland, Where Saint Elizabeth Seton had founded the American Sisters of Charity in 1809, four sisters were sent to Ohio to open a free school and orphanage. To meet the needs of the Church in the Midwest, this mission became an independent motherhouse in 1852, under Mother Margaret Cecilia George, a friend and co-worker of Mother Seton. 

Purpose
The life work of the Sisters of Charity is the sanctification of her own soul and the salvation of the souls of others.

Training
The spiritual and professional training of the sister of this congregation is conducted at the motherhouse through a five-year program in the postulancy, novitiate, and juniorate. A Spiritual renovation program is offered about eight years after final profession.

Qualifications
• Age: 16 to 28.
• The applicant should have an earnest desire to achieve holiness by the dedication of her life to the glory of God and 
salvation of souls.

Habit
The Sisters wear a black habit with a round black cape covering the shoulders and extending below the waist. They wear a white guimpe and a white cap covered by a black veil, which is somewhat longer than the cape.
