Sisters of Charity - Geensburg, PA
Item No.: SP030
History
The Sisters of Charity whose Motherhouse is Seton Hill, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, are a branch of the American of Charity. The first foundation in the Pittsburgh diocese was from Emmitsburg, in 1835. This was withdrawn after 10 years. The second, from Cincinnati, in 1870, is now a pontifical Congregation. Their work embraces the poor and the affluent, the gifted and the handicapped.
Purpose
The sanctification of each Sister, her drawing closer to Christ through prayer and active works of charity, is the whole purpose of the Community. The simple vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience are the bond of union with God, one another, and the Church.
Training
The period of religious formation embraces the postulancy, the novitiate of two years, and five years in temporary vows, after which perpetual vows are pronounced. After first vows the sisters receive the professional education and training necessary for the works of the congregation. At the end of ten years in perpetual vows, a thirty-day retreat is devoted to renovation of fervor.
Qualifications
• Age: under 31.
• Completion of high school.
Habit
The sisters wear a black habit and cap of Mother Seton, a white inner cap, collar, and sleeves, and a separate cape and apron.
