History
OVER THREE CONTINENTS. . . the Daughters of Charity bring the Charity of Christ to France, America, and South Africa. Inspired with that spirit of zeal and love for the Sacred Heart that has ever been the source of new life and activity in the Church, Rose Giet, together with her director, Rev. J. M. Catroux, founded what has since come to be known as the Daughters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Time -- 1823; the place -- La Salle de Vihiers, France.
Purpose
Paramount in their program of service to God is the spreading throughout the world of a great devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Training
The candidates begin with a ten-month postulancy. During this time a full scholastic year is completed by the postulants who prepare for teaching or nursing. This is followed by a two-year novitiate. Temporary vows are made for five years after which perpetual vows are pronounced. During the juniorate the sisters continue their spiritual formation while completing the requirements for their professional degrees.
Qualifications
• Age: 16 to 30.
• Completion of high school.
Habit
The religious habit is very simple: a black uniform, a white neckerchief and coif.
