History
The order of Carmelite Sisters of St. Theresa was founded in Bentley, Oklahoma, in 1917. This Community, which was erected as a diocesan congregation in 1928, is affiliated with the Discalced Carmelite Order, having for its special patrons, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Theresa, The Little Flower of Jesus.
Purpose
The Carmelite Sisters follow the teaching of Little Theresa, especially that of complete abandonment to the loving will of God. The sisters teach in elementary and high schools, nurse in hospitals, operate day nurseries, and care for the mentally disabled.
Training
The congregation has a novitiate program of spiritual formation and teacher-preparation. At the conclusion of the novitiate, the novices make their temporary profession of vows. The spiritual formation is continued as the sisters complete the courses leading toward their professional and nursing degrees.
Qualifications
• Age: 17 to 35.
• Completion of high school.
Habit
The professed sisters wear a dark brown habit, black leather cincture and veil, a white choir mantle, large rosary,
and a crucifix.
