History
Carmelite of the Divine Heart of Jesus forms a new branch of the venerable old tree of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. which is a semi-cloistered, not a purely contemplative order. That is, they combine the contemplative with the active life, under the reformed rule of St. Teresa of Avila. The Carmel of the Divine Heart was founded by our venerable Mother Maria Teresa of St. Joseph in the year 1891. After many trails and hardships a Novitiate was opened in Sittard, Netherlands, which later became the General Motherhouse of the Institution.

Purpose
Personal Sanctification: By means of the three vows of religion; Atonement:For all dishonor heaped upon the Divine Heart of Jesus, by prayer and penance, and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament one day each week, and nocturnal adoration Thursday night before the first Friday; Salvation of Souls: By mothering neglected and homeless children; By conducting homes for the aged; By social and religious work in families.

Qualifications
• Admission to the Order is granted to girls of good families, who are of sound health and intelligence, between the ages of 16 and 30.
• A sealed recommendation given by Confessor or Pastor, school testimonials and a photograph.

Habit
The garb of a Carmelite of the Divine Heart consists of a habit of brown wool, girded by a leather cincture; a large scapular, brown veil and white collar complete the costume.
