History
The Community, “Les Soeurs de L’Assomption de la Sainte Vierge,” took birth on September 8, 1853, feast of the Nativity of Mary, at Sainte-Gregoire, Quebec; at a time when the pastor, unable to obtain religious teachers for his schools, decided upon the advice of his curate, “to make them, since they could not be found already made . . .”. After much prayer and meditation, he found four teachers in the parish, pious young girls aspiring to the religious life. The Lord chose them to establish the new community. They met in the little village school and began their educational work. They opened a novitiate and new convents. In 1872, the Mother House was transferred to Nicolet, the Episcopal See.
